Abstract

First, a knowledge system for prestressed concrete including all the related information from the construction to the service period, from the materials to the structural systems, and from the applied loads to the environmental attacks is presented, then the main contents of analysis and the required parameters for verification in the design of a prestressed concrete structure used in railways, highways, and buildings are expounded. In particular, the general strategy of analysis and design, the functions of the prestressing tendons at the serviceability and ultimate limit states, the characteristics used in stress analysis, and the calculation of deflections are elaborated on. Third, the design objectives, design indexes, and major steps in design are demonstrated. As an example for the design of prestressed concrete railway bridges using the limit state method, the typical actions and combinations in the design are discussed.
