Abstract

This chapter focuses on the most formative institutions in China. In every society, there are certain institutions that are more formative in nature for the fostering of the social and cultural values that the society upholds and on which its existence depends. There are many institutions of a formative nature in the new regime in China, and every institution is used by the Communists as a formative instrument of human behavior. There are the workers' unions, the communes, the Liberation Army, the press, the radio, the festivals and national days, the transport system, recreational centers, the theatres, and a host of others, all of which are institutions with distinct formative functions. Whether one is at work or at play, there is no escape from exposure to the formative designs of the Communist framework. However interesting the subject of the Chinese theatre is, particularly the Chinese opera, from the standpoint of its formative values, space does not permit a full discussion.
