Abstract
The downstream sector is the final supply chain step, where petroleum products are refined and distributed to end consumers. This sector deals with end consumers and clients directly. The refinery that processes crude oil plays a crucial role in the downstream sector. Specifically, the downstream sector is divided into three subcategories: refining, distribution, and safety, demonstrated in taxonomic order. Utilizing various state-of-the-art computing technologies is addressed with the pictorial overview and example use-cases. Next, the challenges in various complex petroleum conversion processes are explored, and eventually, different smart solutions using IoT devices, sensors, and controllers are explained in detail. The main focus of this chapter is to address the challenges of downstream sectors and provide smart and efficient solutions built upon modern technologies.
