Chapter 4 - Sample Collection and Management for Environmental Forensic Investigations

Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the protocols within which environmental forensics investigations must take place, the documentation required for a robust investigation and advances in the development of electronic data recording and management. Documentation of preparations, activities, and analysis is contained within quality systems, which are the same as for standard investigations. Consideration of the final output of an investigation, robust and comprehensive analytical data, must always be prominent, since incorrect sampling, and analysis, can lead to poor data for chemical analysis, and ultimately poor liability assessment. Sample management is discussed, including the availability of readily available, advanced equipment. The development of electronic media interfaces has the potential for reduced error, faster and better data management and generally more robust investigations. However, uptake of these changes is slow, likely due to perceived risk.
