Abstract

The pharmaceutical industry has long utilized the principles of powder technology for drug manufacturing processes. Nanoparticles require specialized equipment to meet regulations established for safe drug development and drug delivery during the formulation process. Today, nanotechnology is providing key manufacturing innovations due to its applicability in process development and design. In fact, nanomaterial quality and performance are heavily influenced by the type of nanomaterial manufacturing process. These processeshelp determine nanomaterial characteristics such as particle size and morphology. Over the last decade, significant advances in nanotechnology were achieved to improve the economics of the manufacturing process, as well as overall product quality. The pharmaceutical industry is experiencing a paradigm shift as it transitions from batch processes to continuous processes. This chapter will discuss nanomaterial applications, review common nanomaterial manufacturing processes, and present innovations that seek to improve the quality of the current processes.
