Abstract

Following the development and commercialization of perfluoro ethylene propylene copolymer (FEP) in 1960, research into developing additional tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) copolymers continued. Simultaneous to development work on tetrafluoroethylene, research was expanded to synthesis of other monomers. Other perfluorinated TFE copolymers were developed to overcome shortcomings of PTFE to allow entry into new applications. The chosen copolymers after FEP were perfluoroalkoxy polymers (PFA) and TFE/perfluoromethyl vinyl ether copolymer (MFA), described in the next section.
