Abstract
Abstract We describe the paradigmatic link between variational problems and differential equations through the classical Euler–Lagrange equations of optimality associated with a variational principle. Through the analysis of several standard and classical problems and situations, we try to convey the main ideas, methods and techniques. The exposition is somewhat informal, but statements have been written with care. Sharp results and further developments are left for specialists.
