Abstract

NodeXL is an Excel template that supports social network analysis and visualization in a spreadsheet environment. This chapter introduced the basics of NodeXL using a simple corporate connection network called the ABCD network. The spreadsheet includes an Edges worksheet that contains a row for each edge and a Vertices worksheet that contains a row for each vertex. The NodeXL ribbon and graph pane tools provide access to NodeXL features, such as the ability to change from an undirected to a directed network. Vertices can be arranged on the graph using a number of automatic layouts (e.g., Fruchterman-Reingold) or can be manually positioned and fixed into place if desired. Best practices for network visualization layouts are provided. Files from various network tools can be imported into and exported from NodeXL, which includes among the most customizable network visualization engines available. Files can be shared on the NodeXL Graph Gallery.
