Abstract

Computers input information from a variety of input devices. Punched cards are declining in use because cards are bulky, expensive, in short supply, are not reusable, have a small capacity, and have file integrity problems. Verification is the “repunching” of cards to be sure that they were punched correctly. It is an expensive and time-consuming process that is being replaced by editing and checking programs. Key-to-tape and key-to-disk systems facilitate high-speed and accurate data entry onto reusable magnetic tapes and disks. Terminal-oriented systems allow users to access the computer on-line. With punched-card data entry, users operate offline from the computer. Touch sensing allows users to point to characters, words, or symbols on the screen of a cathode ray tube (CRT) to initiate the actions that they wish to take. It is one of the most user-friendly interfaces. Source data automation techniques capture data automatically from source documents in computer-readable form so that manual data entry is eliminated.
