Abstract
This chapter focuses on gross plastic deformation design check (GPD-DC). It deals with the main failure mode gross plastic deformation and the secondary failure mode excessive local strain with regard to the short-time response and single monotonic application of actions. The GPD-DC is an investigation of the capacity of the structure to carry all the to-be-considered states of actions safely. The design check encompasses all action states in the design domain and deals with all load cases that correspond to the vertices of the design domain. The chapter summarizes the GPD-DC procedure in detail. The design values of the actions to be considered in this (part of the) design check are given by the product of their characteristic values and the relevant partial safety factors given for normal operating load cases and for testing load cases. The partial safety factors for exceptional load cases are equal to unity. The design values of actions and of all relevant load cases are carried by the relevant design models with maximum absolute values of principal structural strains not exceeding 5% in normal operating load cases and 7% in testing load cases for a stress-free and weightless initial state and for proportional increase of all actions except temperature.
