Abstract

A comprehensive review of 15 prevailing green building rating systems (GBRSs) adopted by different countries around the world is presented. The scopes of the GBRSs in terms of project stages (e.g., predesign, construction, and operation), project types (e.g., new construction and renovation), and building types (e.g., infrastructure, residential, commercial, and industrial buildings) are investigated. All of the evaluation criteria of the GBRSs are also summarized and the top seven criteria are investigated thoroughly. The top seven most important evaluation criteria are “energy,” “site,” “indoor environment,” “land and outdoor environment,” “material,” “water,” and “innovation.” The hierarchy of different GBRSs in terms of rating results is also examined. Lastly, the major themes within the existing GBRS research, as well as directions for future GBRS research are identified.
