Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the expert systems. An essential part of an expert system is the knowledge base. The construction of this knowledge base is of extremely importance because it determines the reliability of the solutions. All the activities thathave to do with the acquisition, the representation, and the intelligent manipulation of knowledge for the purpose of problem solving are called knowledge engineering. Besides the knowledge base, a set of application software tools must be available for performing specific tasks. When a user enters a specific problem, the inference machine of the expert system employs the appropriate application tool provided with the required data and rules from the knowledge base to deliver the solution of the problem in an output device, that is, a display monitor. When the user is familiar with the problem under consideration, common sense, creative and innovative features of humans can be exploited to improve the results.
