Abstract

This chapter examines the rationale and process of converting analog time-based media into the digital format. It begins with an overview of analog audio and moving image collections and discusses the preservation issues associated with deteriorating carriers and the obsolescence of playback equipment. The discussion focuses on digitization as a reformatting strategy for preserving analog audio, video, and motion picture film collections. Furthermore, this chapter includes a review of digitization equipment, technical factors, and formats relevant to audio and moving image conversion. It also provides a summary of current recommendations for converting analog audio and video into the digital format.
