Abstract

Data and related measures are elements of particular importance for the assessment of the transport infrastructure's role in the regional economy and for the description of relevant transport systems. Despite the role played by these two elements in different analytical frameworks, transport industry—and the connected infrastructural characteristics—often registers a lack of data and discrepancies in the measurement of the same phenomenon using different sets of information. These gaps can be partially explained by different regional accounting systems and could make it impossible to perform equivalent assessments in different world regions, as well as reasonable comparisons. The abovementioned elements become even more blurry if transport measures are linked to the level of “performance” and “externalities” associated with the infrastructure network. Thus, this chapter is dedicated to the discussion of main problems and sources for transport data and measures.
