Abstract

The Contribution of the Forestry sector to the National Economy is often measured in terms of its share of the Gross Domestic Product and from indicators such as export revenue, employment creation and industrial output. However, other indicators that take account of the economy and the environment are also used to establish the Gross value added by each sector. An attempt has been made in this section to link the contribution of forestry, wood and NWFPs processing activities to households’ food security and income generation especially in relation to poverty alleviation. The benefits and shortcomings of the System of National Accounts (SNA) and the System of Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting (SEEA) in evaluating the gross value added are described. The characteristics of the forestry sector and conversion factors used in various development pathways are given to assist in policy formulation and economic evaluation of the sector’s contribution to national economy.
