Abstract

Chapter 4 presents the importance of color to photo interpretation. One of only two unique types of information contained on images, color conveys information on rock type. Common rock colors are displayed as spectral reflectance curves. Spectral reflectance is the brightness of a surface in different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Curves are presented for sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks, and soils. An important observation is that rocks seldom display vibrant colors. Hence, unique rock mineralogy is not observable on aerial photographs. Rock mineralogy must be verified on the ground. The chapter concludes with models showing common geologic structural patterns.
