Abstract

A business case study is usually created in the beginning phases of a data warehouse. It is needed when the management is not sure of the benefits of building a data warehouse. The return on investment (ROI) analysis, on the other hand, is created approximately one year after the data warehouse is built. The business case study is a selling document for the data warehouse. The key sections of a business case study are: business user visions, one-to-one discussions, business user profiles, potential payback, accumulated potential payback summary, projected investment costs with ROI forecast, and resource plan. The ROI is a very important part of a data warehouse implementation and should be an integrated part of the project. The ROI analysis highlights data warehouse background, one-to-one discussions, business user profiles, actual payback, actual accumulated and projected payback summary, investment costs with ROI conclusion, and next-step implementation plan. If used properly, it can ensure the future success of the data warehouse implementation as it can enable a person to continue investing in the construction of an enterprise data warehouse.
