Abstract

This chapter focuses on books available to social scientists and also describes the ways of selecting the best books from thousands of titles. The volume of new books appearing annually in the social sciences is constantly increasing and it is important for social scientists to make the best possible use of the sources of information that are available, because if they do not, they are likely to miss important material. Specialist periodicals are useful as sources of information on new books because they frequently carry review sections, some of which are quite substantial. Book reviews vary considerably in length and usefulness, the long reviews not necessarily being the most helpful. A short review usually indicates the scope of the work and assesses its value, generally indicating the author's standpoint where this is relevant. Advertisement details from publishers who specialize in social sciences are helpful as a means of keeping aware of new books, and most publishers will send their catalogues or details of new items on request. Those wishing to see books as soon as possible after their publication should consult current bibliographies that are designed to list books as soon as possible after their publication.
