Abstract

Extracts obtained from the gum resin of various species of Boswellia have been used in traditional herbal medications since ancient times and are still employed in complementary and alternative medicine for treating several ailments. This chapter provides an overview of the numerous studies from available scientific literature which testify to the beneficial effects of Boswellia extracts on human health. There are several lines of evidence emerging from in vitro, animal and clinical studies which substantiate the antiarthritic, antiinflammatory, antiulcer, antibacterial, and antidiarrheal activities as well as hepato-protective and analgesic effects of Boswellia extracts. Moreover, extracts of Boswellia are found to be generally well tolerated by the human body without any major adverse effect. In this context, findings of several clinical trials are also discussed in this chapter.
