Abstract

The increasing demand for energy has motivated the search for alternative energy sources. Primary sources of global energy are dependent on fossil fuels, which cause the emission of pollutants. The need to find alternative sources of sustainable fuel has revealed biomass resources as potentially interested. The production of biofuels from sustainable various renewable resources through acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) fermentation is discussed in this chapter, along with recent advances. Acetone, butanol, and ethanol are known as ABE, a potential fuel produced from biomass using Clostridium species. The importance of the selection in microorganisms, substrates, and pretreatment methods is discussed in this chapter. Furthermore, process parameters that account for upstream and downstream techniques for attaining increased yield are discussed. This chapter focuses on ABE technology, which has the potential to become a vital second-generation biofuel.
