Abstract

This chapter presents a study which is designed to investigate the practice of computer capacity planning. A questionnaire survey is used to collect data directly from the Fortune companies. The chapter discusses the design of the questionnaire, the survey methodology, the overall average rating of the responses, the associated statistical tests, and the implications of these overall rating results. The questionnaire covers five critical issues as well as questions about the company's business and computing environments. There are different approaches that can be used to analyze the system behavior to determine when and what the next capacity upgrade should be for a computer installation. Computer systems are installed to improve user productivity. A mandate of every computer installation is to maintain the computer system performance at a certain level so that the user's productivity cannot be adversely affected. It is therefore to the advantage of every computer installation to establish a set of performance objectives. If properly established, performance objectives can be a very useful mechanism for the management of a computer system.
