Abstract

This chapter first describes that the downstream consequences of nocturia are significant, especially in the elderly with severe nocturia. This is evident with various adverse events and comorbidities associated with nocturia. There is actually a positive correlation between nocturia incidence and a variety of serious medical conditions, and between nocturia incidence and longevity. Unfortunately, many patients and many general practitioners are unaware of the potentially serious and morbid symptom, and assume that it is an inevitable, benign complaint resulting from aging. This chapter also provides information on nocturia imposing negative impacts on affected individuals and its weight on the society as a whole. Nocturia negatively affects the medical costs related to treatment of nocturia and nocturia-related complications such as falls, as well as indirect costs due to reduction in productivity.
