Abstract

Defensive tactics are subject to individual state, federal, or provincial laws, and use of certain defensive tactics strictly subject to the level of training received and competency in that area. This chapter discusses the officer's safety using defensive tactics, various options of defense tactics, training, weapons, alternatives to weapons, and current trends. The security officer must act within the guidelines of the local laws to reduce the likelihood of litigation and one of best defensive tactics is the avoidance of unnecessary conflicts. Being properly equipped greatly enhances the defensive abilities and some of the equipments worthy of safety are: flashlight, bullet-proof vest, and helmet. Since, the possession and the use of weapons are typically controlled by the employer, the client, and the local law enforcement, a thorough understanding of the policies and the laws that apply to a specific situation is critical. Once the security officer understands the regulations to carry and to use a weapon, the officer must be then properly trained to do so. It is essential that this training be conducted with a strong sense of reality and in the actual environment. Safety is paramount and training, along with good judgment and common sense, can help in taking the appropriate actions in any given situation. The use of force, for self-defense or to make an arrest, should always be the last resort.
