Abstract
The interest in N-1 seed perfusion processes has increased significantly in the last few years. Recent work has shown that it lends itself to a “platform” manufacturing strategy that is capable of not only driving cost “out,” but also bringing product quality “in” to bioprocessing, thus making it of significant interest and applicability to all biomanufacturers. This chapter gives an introduction to the basic concepts of the N-1 perfusion seed process, and discusses its opportunities and its limitations while giving practical advice on how to develop such bioprocesses. It reviews the current literature and gives direction as to the likely future direction that this biomanufacturing strategy may take in the coming years.
