Abstract

World Kidney Day (WKD) was established in 2006 to call attention to the seriousness of kidney disease worldwide. Over the years WKD has achieved broad and global media coverage, prominence on social networks, and catalyzed meetings between renal patients and professionals and government health authorities in many countries. Eleven editorials on WKD have been published since 2006 and the number of journals publishing the papers has increased from 8 in 2006 to 67 in 2016. WKD has been endorsed by leading organizations, such as the Pan American Health Organization, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (USA), and the National Institutes of Health (USA). Ministries of Health from several countries have joined WKD celebrations worldwide. After 11 years from its inception WKD has become the most widely celebrated event associated with kidney disease in the world and the most successful effort to raise awareness among both the general public, health professionals, and decision-makers on the importance of prevention and treatment of kidney disease.
