Abstract
The theory of structural reliability is widely applied in many fields. In structural engineering, due to the required long-term security commitments that are subject to various loads, the analysis of a structure's reliability is particularly important. Over time, improvement in structural reliability theory has taken place, along with further development of mathematical sciences, and is showcased throughout this chapter. For some time, the concept of “reliability” was used to evaluate the quality of engineering structures; however, due to the uncertainty of material properties and loadings and various construction and operational errors from an engineering point of view, a structural problem can be considered “uncertain” when some lack of knowledge exists about the theoretical model. This chapter provides the theory necessary to reveal “uncertain” areas of structural reliability.
