Abstract

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring organosulfur compound that has gained popularity as a dietary supplement and is used for a variety of purposes, including as an antiinflammatory agent. Multiple in vitro, animal, and human studies support its use as a safe and effective agent in the treatment of inflammatory conditions, including arthritis. As a GRAS substance, MSM is well tolerated at oral dosages of 2–4g daily, with few observed side effects. This chapter provides an overview of MSM, with specific attention paid to the role of this dietary supplement in the treatment of inflammatory conditions.
