Abstract

This chapter is related to optimization of transesterification reaction parameters to produce hazelnut oil methyl ester with minimum viscosity using KOH as catalyst and CH3OH as alcohol. A parametric experimental study was carried out for this purpose to investigate effects of essential parameters on transesterification reaction such as temperature, catalyst concentration, time, and molar alcohol-oil ratio on viscosity and density of synthesized hazelnut oil methyl ester. Experimental results showed that 9:1 of alcohol-to-oil molar ratio, 60°C reaction temperature, 1.25% catalyst concentration, and 60min reaction time give minimum viscosity of 4.683mm2/s. Flash point (FP) and cold filter plugging point (CFPP) temperatures, fatty acid composition, and higher heating value (HHV) of the optimized methyl ester were also measured to determine its quality.
