Abstract

This chapter summarizes the main points put forward in the different chapters in this book and focuses on a number of key issues: is there one species of red panda or two; the degree of success of the zoo red panda breeding programme and its contribution to research and conservation; the status of red pandas in the various range states together with regional threats and conservation; and finally the possible impact of climate change and how this could be mitigated. It calls on zoos and others to record any differences they find between the Himalayan and Styan's red pandas not only to support the species in question but also to tailor zoo husbandry and field conservation to specific needs. It calls on scientists to standardize their approaches to bamboo nomenclature and to habitat estimation. Finally it emphasizes the need to work together to grow synergies if we are to save this unique species.
