Abstract

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a notorious air pollutant released from both anthropogenic and natural sources and has been acknowledged to cause adverse health and environmental effects. The main focus of the chapter is on health and environmental hazards presented by released SO2. It reviews current knowledge on the impacts of sulfur dioxide on human and environmental health. The effects of long-term and short-term exposure to SO2 have been intensively studied. It has been found that long-term exposure of SO2 revealed a threshold for health effects after 24h about the concentration of 5–40μg/m3. In this chapter, the physicochemical properties, treatment, contamination, and hazardousness of sulfur dioxide on humans and the environment have been discussed. This also reviews the potential risk assessment and management techniques involved in sulfur dioxide toxicity.
