Abstract

Methyl isocyanate (MIC) is a volatile, highly flammable colorless liquid with a strong odor of lachrymatory nature. It easily evaporates into the air. It is highly toxic if inhaled and absorbed through the skin causing burns. Primarily affected organs by MIC include lungs, eye, and skin. People working in industrial units processing MIC are liable to get exposed to MIC either by breathing or touching. This chapter not only provides a deep insight into the chemical nature, properties, hazardousness, ill effects of MIC on human health as well as the environment but also gives a description regarding the risk involved in its handling, risk assessment, and precautions. The risk assessment and management process provide a safety cover to the people associated with the facility along with the population residing in nearby areas and ecosystems.
