Abstract

Current statistics clearly show that obesity has reached epidemic proportions. An aggressive approach to this disease process is therefore necessary. With bariatric surgery being the most effective method available for sustained weight loss, it is not surprising that the number of patients undergoing bariatric procedures has grown exponentially over the past decade. Renal disease is both directly and indirectly associated with obesity. Use of bariatric surgery as a method to reverse or stabilize renal function has shown early promise. Application of bariatric surgery to obese endstage renal disease patients to make them suitable candidates for renal transplantation also shows substantial promise. This chapter focuses on the current status of bariatric surgery and its association with chronic renal disease.
