Abstract

The chapter presents a thorough review of the different elements of the sucker-rod pumping system and includes detailed descriptions of the individual parts. Starting from the well bottom, the different types of subsurface pumps are discussed first. The structural parts, operational principles, and different features of standard and special pumps are explained. Ancillary downhole equipment such as tubing anchors are covered also. The available types of downhole gas separators are introduced and their applications are detailed. The different types of sucker rods, their material, and their operational features are described next. Available procedures for designing tapered rod string are detailed and compared; the evaluation and prevention of rod string failures is presented. The constructional and operational details of available sucker-rod pumping units are described, based on their geometry; detailed procedures are presented for the calculation of their kinematic parameters. At the end of the chapter, gear reducers and the different types of prime movers used in the oilfield are covered.
