Abstract
The worldwide growth in communication networks has generated an interest in the area of speech coding. The emergence of new multimedia applications has motivated a series of algorithm standardization activities. Several organizations have developed speech and audio coding algorithms that are adopted in international standards. This chapter illustrates speech coding algorithms emphasizing, in particular, on methods that are included in voice communication standards. It also explains about speech analysis and speech-coding standards. Speech coding research has evolved greatly in the last 10 years, several algorithms are now rapidly being implemented in consumer products ranging from wireless cellular telephones to computer multimedia systems, and new algorithms are also being considered to improve the capacity and performance of several interface standards.
