Abstract

It is necessary to know how to select values for carbon equivalent level, combined thickness, weld metal hydrogen level, and heat input. These values, which vary with each welding problem, provide points of entry to the nomograms. This chapter provides the basis for the choice of such values. It is emphasized that the procedures in this book have been devised for steels which themselves contain little or no hydrogen, i.e., appreciably less than 1 ppm. Steels of thick section (particularly heavy forgings) which have been recently manufactured and not tempered (or otherwise heated after transformation from austenite) for long times, steels which have been in service in high pressure, high temperature hydrogen, and steels which have been in sour service are particularly at risk.
