Abstract

The heart of irradiated male rhesus macaques uncommonly had focal or multifocal areas of myofiber degeneration and myocardial fibrosis, the latter accentuated by Masson’s trichrome staining. Immunohistochemical staining for alpha smooth muscle actin and galectin-3 revealed positive staining in the areas of myocardial fibrosis. Immunohistochemical staining for caspase 3 revealed myofibers of irradiated animals had cytoplasmic accumulations of caspase 3+ granules or globules located near the poles of myofiber nuclei. Irradiated animals rarely had myocardial abscesses consisting of massive neutrophilic infiltration and bacterial colonization associated with focal areas of myocardial necrosis.
