Abstract

We describe several basic properties of complex systems resulting from their structure and properties of participating media. These systems may exhibit nonlinearities, instabilities, chaos, and emergent properties. The difference between “simple” and “complex” systems may be associated with more complex control structure in the latter systems. Complexity may also appear as a mathematical effect when the system is described in terms of certain “improper” variables. Examples considered here serve to introduce complex systems which possess simplest sequential structures.
