Abstract

It is a essential that practice placements are suitable environments for students to learn in with sufficient resources to support them. Practice supervisors and assessors who plan ahead to receive students will ensure that students will have a safe, effective and positive learning experience. Good preparation ensures a stress-free experience for both students and the staff in practice. This chapter explores the areas that need to be considered when preparing for a student's arrival, how to identify potential problems, and will look at specific aspects of preparation such as information packs and off-duty considerations. Scenarios of both and good bad first days are described. How do I know when to expect students? The chapter takes you through the planning process for students, starting from knowing how to find out how students are arriving. The importance of pre-placement visits is discussed, with the areas to be covered at that first important meeting. Factors to consider when allocating practice supervisors and assessors and planning the student’s off-duty are looked at, and how poor preparation for this essential step can impact the student experience. Key resources which can be invaluable to help support student learning in practice are identified, including online placement profiles, student information packs/folders and student noticeboards.
