Abstract
This chapter reviews the latest discoveries and beliefs around, and discusses the current models of, cardiovascular signaling pathways. Genetic variation of the components of these pathways is described where data are available, with the emphasis on the importance on functioning and regulation of signaling systems. The compartmentation of signaling within the cardiac cell is another focus of this chapter. One recent notion that will be discussed is nuclear localization and action of receptors and other components of signaling machinery. Also, the well-recognised role of cardiac caveolae as signalosomes creating local signaling domains in the cardiomyocyte will be discussed. Finally, possible applications of the current knowledge of cell signaling for clinical cardiology will be touched on here.
