Abstract

Bottom-up, immigrants, bad neighbors: these are not just topics you might discuss during Happy Hour with friends. These are terms relevant to a discussion about plants in urban landscapes. Plants are the most conspicuous biological components of urban/suburban landscapes. In Chapter 1, we learned that plants, as the primary food and habitat source for insects, are important shapers of insect communities. Plants harvest the energy from the sun and translate that energy into a biomass that delivers mainly nitrogen and carbon to herbivorous animals. In this chapter, you will learn some basic concepts of plant-insect interactions, plant diversity, esthetics, and the functions of plants in urban landscapes. These concepts are useful in understanding the role of plants in pest outbreaks and the rationale behind the native plant movement.
