Abstract

Pesticide pollution in freshwater ecosystem is a major environmental concern these days. The amount of pesticides found in freshwater bodies like river streams, lakes, ponds, and its adverse impacts on aquatic organisms have drawn the interest for researcher endeavors. Freshwater pollution is affected by a large number of factors which include various human activities like the excessive use of pesticides to get a high yield of crops, pesticides runoff from terrestrial environment to water bodies, disposal of chemical waste directly to water, which not only spoils the water quality, but is also toxic to the nontarget organisms such as fishes, shrimps, phytoplanktons, zooplanktons, and humans. Therefore, this present book chapter comprehensively emphasizes the occurrence of pesticides in fresh water, and their potential sources/pathways, its impacts along with advancement in detection and remediation technologies, and prospective for future research.
