Abstract

This chapter discusses various types of membranes and introduces them in detail. First, a description of isotropic and anisotropic membranes depending on the membrane structure is provided in this chapter. The characteristics of MF, UF, NF, and RO based on pore size are described in detail. In addition, the materials widely used in membranes are classified into inorganic, organic, hybrid, and novel materials, and detailed cases of materials are explained. Finally, this chapter introduces four representative membrane modules (plate-and-frame, tubular, hollow fiber, and spiral wound) that are widely used in industry. Readers will be able to obtain from this chapter basic information on membranes necessary to understand the following chapters.
