Abstract
In this chapter we describe the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. This is one of the earlier algorithms to be developed based on inspiration from nature and uses features of the flocking behavior of birds. We describe the basic algorithm together with some selected modifications of the original algorithm and we provide numerical studies and graphical illustrations of the performance of the PSO algorithm.
