Abstract

This chapter deals with the origin of modern humans through the use of archeological evidence and genetic studies. Anthropologists and geneticists make use of fossils, ancient remains, and contemporary human and primate sources to trace evolution. Some of the techniques used by them range from optically stimulated luminescence, oxygen and carbon isotope analysis, DNA analysis, genetic testing, etc. to compare, as well as to formulate and test hypotheses regarding the origin and migratory patterns of species. This chapter explores what it means to be human, some of the hallmarks of human development, the possible migratory routes out of Africa, and addresses the question are H. sapiens still evolving.
