Abstract

The ability of retroviruses to replicate requires the co-option of host cell factors and machineries. In this chapter, we provide an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the ability of retroviruses to commandeer host cell nucleoporins of the nuclear pore complex. From the available evidence in the literature, the ability to co-opt these host proteins facilitates access to the nuclear import and export machinery, promotes the evasion of host cell antiviral immune responses, promotes viral assembly, and ultimately is critical to the production of progeny virus particles.
