Abstract

Migrating to Windows 2000 from legacy Windows NT domains can take the form of one of two types of migrations: Domain upgrade and Domain restructure. The type of migration depends entirely on the plans for the Active Directory for the forests, domains, Domain Name System (DNS) namespace, organizational units (OUs), and site topology, and the way they fit with the existing domain structure. When installed on a new computer, Windows 2000 Server automatically installs itself as a member server. However, when upgrading a PDC or BDC, Windows 2000 Server automatically begins the process to install the Active Directory by starting the Active Directory Installation Wizard as soon as the Windows 2000 Server installation is complete. An Active Directory domain has two modes: mixed mode and native mode. When running in mixed mode, the Active Directory acts as a PDC for any legacy Windows NT BDCs which enables backward compatibility as well as an incremental upgrade strategy such that each server can be migrated and verified before beginning the next. Native mode is required for using Active Directory features such as nested groups.
