Abstract

Publisher Summary The purpose of this chapter is to provide some guidelines for structuring the data-gathering process. These are only guidelines; they do not represent the only or necessarily the best way to structure this process. There are many approaches to gathering intake and assessment data that could be consistent with ecosystemic play therapy. The process used should meet the needs of the client, the therapist, and the system in which treatment is to be implemented. It outlines the key components of this process. The focus of this chapter is on the unique issues involved in completing an ecosystemic play therapy intake. The specific structure of the intake process depends on the developmental level of the child, the structure of the child's ecosystemic context including culture, and the therapist's approach and work setting. The chapter addresses some of the logistics involved in gathering the intake information needed for successful ecosystemic play therapy treatment planning. It presents a detailed description of the entire process right from the initial contact, to interviewing children, interviewing caregivers, to the closure of the therapy.
