Abstract

Due to the increased popularity of industrial hemp and hemp-derived products in recent years, the study of hemp law has emerged as a specialized area of law of importance for agricultural producers, processors, traders, and consumers. The legal and regulatory framework for industrial hemp is extremely complex depending on the intended industrial hemp use and differs from country to country, which significantly complicates trade and import-export arrangements. This chapter gives an overview of legal history and current industrial hemp laws in the United States, Europe, and Canada, in relation to hemp cultivation and hemp-based food products, while not addressing cannabidiol (CBD) that is added to foods.
