Abstract

This chapter focuses on LEED™ documentation and technical requirements. According to the US Green Building Council's (USGBC), the entire LEED™ documentation, and certification process has been greatly streamlined and has migrated online in an effort to simplify the process and reduce the time and cost of achieving LEED™ certification. LEED™ Online is a user-friendly interface that enables project team members to upload credit templates, track Credit Interpretation Requests (CIRs), manage key project details, contact customer service, and communicate with reviewers throughout the design and construction reviews. Streamlining the certification process simplifies the documentation and certification process, making it more user-friendly and easier for project teams to manage without negatively impacting the technical rigor and quality of the LEED™ process. Under the latest LEED™® certification program, green-building design focuses on seven basic categories: sustainable sites (SS) credit category, water efficiency (WE) credit category, energy and atmosphere (EA) credit category, materials and resources (MR) credit category, indoor environmental quality (IEQ) credit category, and innovation and design process credit category. The LEED™ certification process consists of five basic stages: registering the project, integrating LEED™ requirements, obtaining technical support, documenting the project for certification, and the certification notification. When specifying green-building materials, it is best to follow the Construction Specifications Institute's (CSI) MasterFormat™, as most building specifications are organized according to it. These specifications can be used to benchmark the efficacy of other environmental specifications also.
