Abstract

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) offers a multitude of cognitive, behavioral, emotional, physiological, and social benefits that can be particularly healing for survivors of trauma. A clinical rationale for AAT is provided that considers existing research and clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. Two case studies illustrate how AAT can be successfully incorporated into effective psychotherapies for trauma recovery.
